"The nature of aesthetic experience: Adorno's concept of 'image'" - On Adorno 1/3
by: daniele

*Tuesday 4th November - 4pm - RHB 141*
Towards the beginning of paragraph 4 of the chapter on natural beauty, Adorno writes, "Like the experience of the art, the aesthetic experience of nature is that of images". In the previous section he discussed 'cultural landscape'; what follows this quote is an extensive critique of natural beauty. Here the emphasis seems to be on art, what art is, what it can or cannot do. Yet I would argue that this notion of image is central to both discussions - indeed central to the understanding of aesthetic experience. In the seminar I would like to explore this notion of image, with reference to this chapter (paying particular attention to Adorno's examples) and with further reference to The Dialectic of Enlightenment, Benjamin's writing on Baudelaire and the paintings of Raoul de Keyser.
T. Adorno, Aesthetic Theory, chapter (depending on the edition) entitled 'The beauty of nature' or 'Natural beauty'
